What is catnip?

Catnip, Nepeta cataria, is a member of the mint family of herbs. For centuries humans have grown catnip for humans, but the herb is best known for its action on cats. The chemical in catnip called nepetalactone is what cats respond to. However, not all cats react to catnip. Kittens will not show the behavior until they are at least 6-8 weeks old.

About 80% of adult cats (including many kinds of wild cats!) react to this intoxicating herb. The catnip reaction is inherited, and some cats are totally unaffected by it, but when they do react – YEOWWW!

The media could not be loaded.  Bought this to distract our kitty when we moved into our new house. He loves to use it as a kick toy, throw it in the air and rub his face all over it. I have bought the cigar and rainbow from this brand and have always had good results. I’ve purchased some for my moms cats and they have the same reaction. Best catnip in my opinion. My cat plays with this daily and I usually buy a new one after 6 months or so. Given how rough he is with it, I think this is pretty durable.

A big hit with my two middle-aged kitties, especially on first exposure. The cloth-surfaced toy feels like it’s packed with catnip from end to end, quite a difference from smaller toys that are mostly stuffing (or the cheap ones that only have a catnip pouch). If you’ve never seen a catnip-loving cat react to a fresh, intense new catnip toy (like this one) coming out of the wrapper with a burst of aroma, you owe it to yourself and kitty alike. This isn’t the cheapest toy, but even just my black cat’s (pictured) first ten minutes with this banana was worth the price. Recommended.

I’m on my cat’s 3rd banana he so throughly loves these until they’re falling apart.I’ve bought them as gifts for friends cats, who also love them.Heres how to refresh a banana toy that looks gross & dirty..A dirty but untorn up one washes well in a gentle wash, using cool or warm temp & All Free and Clear Detergent & no fabric softener (cats don’t like scented laundry detergents, or softeners, either of those would interfere with the catnip scent). Tumble dry on medium high, it looks new again, and it even seems to refresh the catnip scent, as my cat was acting like it was new when I did that the last couple times. Also, if a cat loses interest, but it’s not dirty, spray catnip spray on it, to prolong its lifespan. I can’t imagine needing that, but maybe other cats have different needs catnip than mine

The owner gave us a bunch of his catnip toys a few years ago when we met briefly. Our three cats were hooked immediately. I have never seen them go after a toy so fast and for so long it was amazing. It took a while, but they wore out those toys! I was amazed one day when I took a couple kitties for their yearly checkup to find a brand new display of these toys at our local vet’s office! They had just started selling them. Needless to say, I bought a dozen of them! Again, our kitties were absolutely delighted! Now, with the recent state of events, we can’t even get into the vets office and the toys are rather used up again. Our kitties bat, bite, rub, claw, kick, and lick them like crazy and they get dirty and nasty from be so well “loved”. So, one day I was on Amazon and thought, I wonder if they’re selling the toys on here… To my great pleasure, they were! I have ordered several and we just received the banana. The moment it came out of the Amazon package…before it was out of the ziplock bag…our grey cat saw it. Her eyes got huge and sat up so fast. She just sat there staring at it until we gave it to her! She knew exactly what it was. We got it out of the bag and within half a second she was licking and rubbing all over it. Our second cat, who was two rooms away walked in a few minutes later sniffing around. Kitty number one had it on her perch so kitty number two could not see it, but he could smell it. He found it within a minute and the two of them had a little “dance” over who was going to get to play with it. Luckily, kitty number one was pretty well stoned at this point, so kitty number two was able to wrestle it away and do his own licking, rubbing, and kicking to his hearts content. Kitty number three is downstairs so luckily we didn’t have another little dance. When he comes up, hopefully the other two will still be content and he’ll get to play for a bit…or better yet, the other ones I ordered will get here so everyone can have their own again. ;)Needless to say, our kitties absolutely adore these. We have never found another catnip toy that works quite like these do. I don’t know exactly what they put in these, but our kitties are absolutely addicted! I’ve seen others complain about quality, but we don’t have a problem with them. Maybe our kitties are a little less aggressive, but we’ve not had any break open. They just get dirty and nasty from all the licking – and I mean the kitties will lick these until they are seriously wet with saliva! They bite them, but they don’t really chew on them. They are thick material and the seams are solid…at least the ones I have gotten. We’ve been more than happy with them and will continue to purchase and highly recommend them to everyone! These are great! :)

This arrived today. The cat was on me before I could get it out of the sealed plastic.I tossed it on the floor, and Basil, the nip-head, was all over it. While I didn’t smell anything, one of the other cats got a contact high! Right now, the one cat who has never been interested in intoxicants of any kind, has taken possession of the ‘nanner, and is refusing to relinquish it.

Let me just say that writing this review was a real moral & ethical dilemma. Do I write it based on my cat’s reaction to the toy? Was her reaction “good”???THE TOY: Okay, I bought a ton of toys that were all super highly rated bc my cat got fat & I felt like a bad parent but I’m not about to shame her for it. When this came in the mail I was like “oh, that makes sense” because it is LITERALLY ONLY CATNIP AND NOTHING ELSE shoved inside of a cotton banana carcass.THE CAT: I placed it near her and she did nothing. I think she’s broken. The catnip *relaxed* her. I put it ON her & she did nothing. Amazon does not accept cat returns.ULTIMATELY: The toy relaxed her so I decided that it works. It took a lot of very hard thinking about what a toy is *supposed to do*The cat will remain fat, I’m guessing.

Despite all of the glowing reviews I really didn’t expect this to work for my cats. I was completely wrong.I have two very large cats: one about 20lb and the other 15lb. Both were strays that somehow made their way into my home without me realizing it. Because they both grew up a little feral, they usually aren’t interested in traditional cat toys. They will sometimes show interest in ‘realistic’ toys, but otherwise are more content to destroy household objects like earphones and electrical cords. However, the second I unwrapped this toy (minimal packaging – just a ziploc, which I prefer), they went nuts. They played with this for hours and even the 20lb cat was able to kick at this. Even after all of that abuse, the banana didn’t fall apart. It has a few bite marks, but no catnip is falling out. The first one I purchased seemed to lose its allure after about a month, so I put it in a ziploc bag with some catnip to infuse it again. That seemed to do the trick and they were very interested again. Vets recommend cycling toys anyway since cats will get bored.I’ve also purchased other products from this brand and have been similarly impressed. My boys have also really liked  Yeowww My Cats Balls, 3 Balls per Pack  and it helps them get a bit more exercise.

The Yeowww! Catnip Banana is the closest thing you can get to a “sure thing” in a cat toy. I have probably bought 3 bunches of these so far for my cats, shelter/foster donations, and gifts. Most cats that are 6-9 months and older react to catnip; can see the color yellow; and enjoy the “bearhug” (simultaneaously kicking and biting). All three of mine are banana fans to different extents. One likes to sit and lick it. Eww. Another won’t look for it, but if she stumbles upon it will look around furtively and then sit on it…for hours…eventually dragging it to her “secret” hidey hole for a good hour of cheeking. Kitty number three finds the banana to be an aggressor that needs to be pursued, taken down, and detained. Did you know bananas can fly? Cats, too. That catnip is funny stuff if you inhale. Which I do not, obviously. Some cats simply don’t react to catnip at a particular lifestage or at all. They may still have fun kicking the banana around. Or they may look at you like you have three heads.Yeowww also sells other versions of this toy. Over time I have seen a fish, a lemon, a cigar, and some tiny fish. Skip them all in favor of the banana. The combination of the shape and the color just works…and you will want to replace it (ewww) long before the cats are ready.A note on imitations: don’t bother. I have, in times of need, purchased Yeowww banana knockoffs from my local pet store. Half the price–what could go wrong? The catnip scent wasn’t that strong to begin with, and the poser bananas will fail to attract cats within a week. Although I’m all about half-price, it’s just not worth it here. Get the good stuff.I do not work for Yeowww! but my living room often smells like I do. =-)

I got this as a replacement for a well loved and well slobbered upon Yeowww! catnip banana. All of them I’ve ever gotten have extremely potent catnip in them, the most potent of any catnip toy I have ever gotten. Eventually any catnip gets old as the volatile oils evaporate and loses its “kick,” but they last for a relatively long time. My cat loves his banana and it has already provided many hours of stoned up enjoyment for him. When this one gets old and decrepit I will get him a new one so he can continue to doze in a catnip haze seeing sounds and tasting colors.

My feline overlord bids me to notify you about the superiority of the Yeowwww Banana. I am currently required to purchase her another, for she has ensured her current catnip offering is at the end of its lifespan. When the banana comes out, my furry mistress comes running. She salivates at its presence and can be found stalking it weeks after purchase. The problem of catnip losing potency isn’t an issue here. The toy remains beguiling to sharpened feline senses for quite a while.I appreciate this banana is very well made, stitched tightly and made from a fabric tough enough to resist back claws bunny-kicking the heck out of it. My girl can get a good “hug” on the banana (much to my eternal amusement), chew the stem and beat the other end to death with her paws. I haven’t had to vacuum anything up.This is our favourite cat toy — hers for stimulation and fun, mine for the entertainment of watching her.
