Bird Feeding Fundamentals – When Feeding Wild Birds, There Are 4 Keys To a Successful Program

Food

Provide different types of food to attract more variety of birds. Sunflower is a great seed that many species love. Higher quality mixes attract more birds. Keep feeders full so birds will continue to visit.

Feeders

Provide a variety of feeders to attract the greatest variety of birds. Use hoppers and tube feeders for Sunflower and mixes. Use Finch feeders for Nyjer and Finch mixes. Platform feeders will accommodate ground feeding birds.

Water

Provide a shallow water source (2 inch-3 inch deep) so birds can bathe and drink. Water also attracts birds that feeding stations alone cannot, such as ones that feed on insects alone.

Location

Place feeders in locations already frequented by birds. Place by shrubs and/or trees to offer protection.

FAQ’s

Where should I locate my feeder to attract the most birds?

Make sure that your feeder is close to natural shelter such as trees and shrubs to provide protection for your birds, but be careful not to make it too convenient for squirrels. Also, place it in a location so that you can enjoy watching the activities of your feathered friends.

Should I feed the birds year-round?

Yes, birds need food year-round, so it is best to keep bird feeders full all year. Birds have a high metabolism and need to continually eat. Birds nest from late winter through late summer and during these months there is not an abundance of natural foods, so they need additional food for breeding and raising their young.

What is the best bird food?

Oil Sunflower Seed is one of the best seeds to have in a wild bird food mix. It is popular with a large number of species and is easy to feed in a variety of feeder styles. Wagner’s blends provide a wide selection of seed choices that will attract a largest variety of birds to the backyard feeder. Wagner’s has the mixes that will attract the species you want and will fit any budget.

How can I attract specific birds and not attract others (e.g. starlings, grackles and cowbirds)?

Make sure that you have the right bird food to attract specific birds. Sunflower is a great seed that many species love. Also specialty blends, such as Wagner’s Cardinal Blend or Finches Supreme, will attract these specific birds. Birdseed with less milo and corn won’t attract as many cowbirds, grackles and starlings if you would rather not see these birds.

How do I stop squirrels from eating all of my birdseed?

Squirrels are a common problem at bird feeders. There are now a number of feeder styles designed to prevent squirrels from reaching the seed. Additionally, there are two seeds that squirrels do not like — safflower and nyjer seed. An optional method is to supply the squirrels with their own supply of food away from the bird feeder area. Cracked corn works nicely.

Where and how should I store my bird seed after I bring it home?

Store your bird seed elevated on a shelf in a cool, dry location. Make sure that it is closed or sealed tightly in original package or in a storage container. It is important that the storage location has good air circulation and is away from direct sunlight or heat source. You should avoid storing your bird seed on a cement floor, since moisture from the floor can be transferred to the seed.

We have a wide variety of birds in North East Texas. They all seem to like this southern mix. We mix in about 1/3 of black oil sunflower seeds for a custom blend. There appears to be a good mix of different seeds and the contents appear to be fresh.I was a little concerned about some of the reviews but this product works for me. I reordered the same thing.

My birds love this mixture. Feeder is usually empty by day’s end, so I am assuming that the flavor is excellent:)We live in Ctrl Texas and have many different bird species. Last winter we counted 19 bird species at the feeder, including those that come in winter only (3 kinds of finches, Pine siskin and Red Polls)

Been there, done that. Hey, what’s that

Getting more birds than ever with this blend. literally watching fights break out at the feeder. Makes me wonder if it’s bird food or bird candy that’s in there.

I purchased this twice because the regular 40 pound wild bird food I’d been using from Wagner’s for the same price hadn’t been available… Well, of course my array of birds were thrilled all winter as this ‘flavor’ is crammed with sunflower seeds! They were in heaven, and brought all their friends! Alas, I can’t afford that and returned to the other with less sunflower seeds and more plain seeds. They’re not happy, but it’s springs and there’s worms, so all is well! :D

First off…the bag is HUGE lol. Way way bigger than I pictured in my head. Not that that’s a bad thing tho! I’m in South Louisiana and we just purchased our first home…right away we realized how many birds had already made it their home here wayyyyyyy before we got the keys lol…there’s a three story mansion birdhouse sitting 9 feet above the ground that is NEVER vacant that came with the house…so obviously I felt the need to continue making their stay here as enjoyable as possible. Just like they’re making mine ❤️. Filled my first cheap bird feeder with a cheap bag of “wild” seed that I bought from Lowe’s.. bc I had never owned a bird feeder before & had no idea what our “natural” birds even eat but wanted to make sure I did SOMETHING ya know?! 🤷‍♀️ Once I realized they were actually using it, I got WAY WAY WAY more involved lol. So we now have a 8ft stand in the front yard (that we set in cement in a 5 gallon bucket & buried it lmao) that holds two hanging baskets filled with their favorite flowers at the top, two large feeders 1 for the hummingbirds & the other for our long time tenants, a large birth bath, & a wire mesh basket for organic meal worms. The original small feeders and one humming bird feeder have been tucked into the back yard. On our upstairs front balcony I bought a solar powered led stained glass feeder and a hand blown glass humming bird feeder. So all in all, we have lots and lots of places for the birds to chill and get fat.Tomorrow is cleaning day for of ALLLLL of the feeders, even the hummingbird ones and their bath since we’ve had nonstop weather for a week.I plan to use both seed bags but in different containers this time. I’ll use the cheap seed in the fancier feeders and this yummy seed in the cheap early purchase feeders…and just sit back and WATCH.Will be posting updates of all feeders and all seed outcomes in about 2 weeks w/picsI think that entertaining the birds, squirrels, & insects will quickly become a new obsession for me so if anyone has any recommendations for a newbie, I’d love ANY help 😁 taylorjoffrion@gmail.com

I have a huge variety of birds at the feeders and in my forest area and they all seem to love this mix the most. Sometimes I mix it with one of Wagner’s cheaper mixes with more corn, so that the squirrels and chipmunks get enough food and nutrition also. None is wasted, and they clean up the feeders most days and nights.

Birds love this seed. There is a good variety and it is good quality. I purchase all the time and have now included in my subscribe and save program. Happy I chose Wagner!

Normally I feed my yard feather friends regularly and they gently reminded me that I have not fed them lately. I normally run out to the big box stores for this item but decided that I would check the pricing and brands on Amazon after one of my feather friends decided to come in the house and fetch something himself lol. The brand is one I’m well familiar with and the price and quantity simply cannot be beat. Fast and secured packaging and shipping by the vendor. Overall, I’m happy, the feather friends are now full bellied and I would highly recommend.

The birds who visit my feeders are indeed happy with this food. Dozens and dozens visit and eat which brings so much joy to us as we watch and listen to their beautiful songs of thanksgiving. I’ll be ordering again soon.
