I have read the negative reviews of this radio and I don’t know what people are doing wrong. When me and a buddy wanted to get into CB we each got a portable (this one) and a car mounted. After tuning SWR in a large open field on the vehicle mounted one he set off down the road and I stayed put to see the distance we got. Standing outside the car we had comms for over 2 miles. I could hear him well, and him me. He even said I sounded better on this than the vehicle unit. I bought it in 2017, here we are in 2020 and not a single problem from this unit. I use it as at least a couple times a week and couldn’t be happier.

update; So, radio worked as to be expected with the included rubber duckie antenna, however, once I ordered and deployed a good magnetic mount antenna (Hustler CB antenna) for the car my receive and transmit range was instantly boosted to 5 miles (verified). I did tune the antenna to the radio with my SWR meter and was only using AA battery power when I did this test. I would imagine I will double that distance at night when AM radio wave propagation is at its best. Very good product and highly recommended with a good, tuned, vehicle antenna. These are a little to big if you are thinking of using them as walkie talkies and range will be very subjective as the AM band is affected by lots of variables, like sunspots for example (thats why they work amazing at night). You might want to consider an FRS/GMRS radio if you just need walkie talkies and have no reason to talk to truckers or others on CB freqs.

Using an adapter and roof mounted magnetic mount antenna, this hand held works as well as a vehicle mounted unit

The primary reason I am writing this review is to let potential buyers know that you don’t need to purchase anything besides this unit in order to have a working CB, unlike what some reviews have stated. It comes with an adapter to plug it into your lighter in the car and you can also operate it with 9 AA batteries. Finally, it comes with its own antenna. Now, for my “review”. Although the unit feels a little on the cheap side, it’s definitely well made and sends a reasonably power signal. I tested it with the Uniden 980SSB in my jeep and it worked well. I purchased, but have not set up, an external antenna. I don’t know that I’ll try it with that–members of my jeep club use CBs to communicate on the trails and this has plenty of output for that purpose. All in all, a very good bargain!

Great little 40 channel CB radio for trips or in a car without a CB installed or for car to car communication. Stay in contact with truckers also on Channel 19. Has Hi and low power switch. Hi power is 4 watts on new batteries or when plugged into 12v outlet. No mention of power output on low. Other hand helds that I have used are 1 watt to conserve battery power. About range: With the supplied antenna, I would anticipate not more than 2 to 5 miles depending on terrain. In town about 2 miles max due to terrain, buildings, electrical noise, etc. With an external antenna, range should be the same as a mobile installation. This is a Uniden radio. I have a 50 year old Uniden Bearcat scanner still going. That is dependability.

I bought two of these radios. They work as expected. With the included antenna, you will get about 200-250 yards on full power. Using a more opitimal antenna, these perform like any other full power CB radio. Even if you can only use a full sized antenna on one unit, it will improve the performance considerably. If you’re looking for range and portability, the UHF FRS walkie talkies will be for you. These radios use AM at 27MHz, which can ‘talk out’ further than UHF FM in non line of sight conditions. If you’re looking for range at the expense of larger antennas, these may be your better bet. Don’t expect much from the included antennas.

I put an external antenna on, and for indoor use was able to receive some truckers. In the car, with stock antenna, and plugged into the cigarette lighter, was also able to hear truckers on the highway. Can’t address the issue of transmission range, as I have yet to make a contact. As a hobbyist, as opposed to someone requiring this unit for important travel use, I thoroughly enjoy it. Used to have a CB in the car years ago, so it is enjoyable to revisit this.

This thing works great for off-road club events. Just used it all weekend at Winter 4×4 Jamboree in southern Utah. Was loud and clear and easy to use. We were debating on another model with more features, but we didn’t need them. We did use an external magnetic antenna, but we certainly didn’t need it in a 20-30 Jeep crew. We were able to hear the trail leader and the tail gunner just fine all weekend, even without the magnetic antenna.

This portable hand held CB transceiver completely meets my requirements. It is easy to use. It has an antenna connection that will easily accept other standard antennas. The transmission and reception are both audibly clear, and the physical size and weight are agreeable to me. The power alternatives are acceptable, too! It is the sort of CB radio that I will not hesitate to take along on nature walks, trips to the field, and travel situations. I find it so acceptable that I purchased a second one to use at another location.

I had no idea how this would work under the conditions I needed. I pick this up to used with a motorcycle to stay in communication with the other bikes. Found that it worked fine. I was able to communicate between the bikes loud & clear by just talking into the mic. Wasn’t looking for long-distance just communication and it did the job perfectly.Three years later, the radio still works fine. I use AA lithium batteries for maximum power, batteries lasted 1 year without issues. I continue to used the radio as a portable hand held, but have modified it with a cobra two pin mic. My radio is placed in a cup holder attached to the handle bar of a motorcycle. Highly recommended.Four year review. The radio still works with the lithium battery’s inside the radio. I replace them in the spring as a precaution and regular maintenance. It’s used on a regular basis as a club tail gunner for communication with the ride leader. Average distance 1/4 mile. I use two types of 2 pin mics. A lapel shoulder mic or a headset with mic, both work fine but prefer the lapel mike for convenience and comfort.
