I bought this as part of my home theater upgrade to 4k. Much cheaper than buying a new XBOX. The player itself is easy to plug in and it started outputting content first try. The included Netflix app looks amazing and the button on the remote to go directly to the app is much appreciated.Responsiveness to remote commands is good. The Netflix app likewise spins up quickly. Reading Blu-Ray DVDs is not snappy, but it’s no worse than any other Blu-Ray player I’ve used. And it’s faster than some.

Bought this after doing a lot of research on 4K blu ray players. Overall, I’m very happy.I used this to replace my Sony UBP-X700 4K player, which I hate so much. It lags, takes forever to load, doesn’t remember where you left off, etc. Do not buy the UBP-X700 player.Instead, buy this Panasonic one. So much better by comparison. No lag. Very fast interface and loading time. Remembers where you left off when you pause/stop/turn-off the player. Very happy that I made the switch.

Well, the short version of why I chose this particular Blu-ray player is because of a lot of research! Going from an Oppo BD-93 to this Panasonic was easily the best decision I have made this year! Setup was a breeze. Highly recommend the firmware update! The same blu-ray discs that my Oppo played many times look as good,if not better than before on this Panasonic! All the info you need to know is on the box or the quick setup menu! AAAA+ product!

DTS audio problem with home theatre not fault of this player, and player has work-around. Here: Using this player with oldish all-in-one dvd/receiver/amp. Samsung 4k TVs no longer support DTS so HDMI pass-through won’t work. Optical fiber is a slow spec and doesn’t support DTS so that way direct won’t work. This player has an extra audio HDMI but my all-in-one receiver has no extra HDMI so this way direct is also a no. Work-around is in settings to output LPCM stereo when DTS is unavoidable. Dolby Surround 5.1 is fine.

First of all, do NOT use this as a streaming device! Go buy a NVIDIA Shield and all your streaming issues go away forever. Buy this as a wonderful 4K Blu-ray player! It has a mode called “HDR Optimizer” that Panasonic claims will do a better job with HDR than I can, and they aren’t kidding! I turned that on and went through many light and dark scenes in the first Hobbit movie. At no time was it so dark I couldn’t tell what was going on anywhere in the scene (my pet peeve with dark scenes in movies), and at no time was it so bright that it seemed in any way washed out. It just looked fantastic, and I can’t wait to watch all six Lord of the Rings movies on it. I can’t speak to hardware longevity since I just got it, but there is nothing to complain about the results it provides. Highly recommended.

I was looking forward to updating my Oppo Blu-Ray player to 4K when I discovered that Oppo had exited the Blu-Ray business (darn it). After doing some pretty intensive research, Panasonic seems to be the new reigning champion (My very first Blu-Ray player was a Panasonic, so we’ve come full circle). And we now own two 4K players (a DP-UP820 and a DP-UB420); they are fast, have been fairly bullet-proof, and have a fantastic picture and audio. The hardest part is making sure everything in the signal chain is rated for 4K video (otherwise, you’ll get nothing but 1080). For me, this meant replacing the receiver, and all of the HDMI cables. Once that was done, beauty. From a former Oppo user, this is a great 4K/UHD Blu-Ray player, backed by a great company. Highly recommended.

I purchased this player to replace my previous Panasonic player which is still working after around 10 years, this player can play 4k discs which my previous one couldn’t. The picture is excellent which I find is consistent with Panasonic players, and the remote has a number of channels to choose from if you have more than one Panasonic player. Menus are straight forward. my only complaint is that I would like a composite video out on the player so I could setup the next video to play, in my home cinema without effecting the video playing. Unfortunately all the brands have dropped the composite output, so it becomes a mute point, in choosing a player.

Sony UBP-X700 Blu-ray player vs Panasonic DP-UB420-K … both are 5-star bargains and so must be selected based on features, not playback performance.TLDR: I gave a small nod to the Panasonic DP-UB420-K as the better buy.420 supports Alexa commands (using a crappy difficult to setup skill and a secret menu – press Option button on remote for 5 seconds), HDR Optimizer (for older TVs and projectors), ac networks, optical digital output, 2 (over 1) USB ports, streams DLNA, 3D, and has a larger remote. Amazon marked Open Box for $112. HDR10+ is set on by hand. Poor CD player. Seems to provide ever so slightly better color.700 supports SACD audio disks (mine are now worth up to ten times what I paid for them), has smartphone app (“Video & TV Sideview”), 1 year vs 90 day warranty, has digital coax output (instead of optical), plays a greater number of audio and video files, supports Miracasting, and uses less power (so no fan and quieter). Alas, Dolby Vision and 24p output must be switched on and off by hand. Refurbished unit at Walmart for $135. Seems to provide ever so slightly better contrast.Neither play DVD-Audio (boggles my mind as to why), both have a flimsy build, and both have separate video and audio HDMI (to connect video directly to newer TV, skipping older AV). The 700 has an external transformer (while the 420 has a plain power cord – surely why the 420 is slightly deeper / bigger).420 supposedly supports Dolby Vision with firmware upgrade – I don’t see it. I had rare connectivity problems with unit’s WiFi that were solved with a physical connection.700 supposedly stops freezing with firmware upgrade (aka 700M) – no problems.I couldn’t decide, needed two, and so bought one of each. I swore I’d never own a Blu-Ray player, believing the original format was DOA, and yet I’ve own over a half dozen of them (streaming doesn’t compare, especially for ATMOS). Buying both got me SACD playing from the 700 and improved error messages from the 420 (which I installed with a Marantz CD/SACD player). I am very happy.NOTE: 12-bit Dolby Vision easily beats HDR10+ but both are a joke since no current TV can really make use of the improved abilities (nobody wins a format war, right? So HDR10 is winning). You might be able to see the “big” difference, but I can’t. rtings.com states “Don’t worry about HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision because they all deliver a great experience. Keep in mind few current TVs go above 1000 cd/m², so it doesn’t matter for now.” You’d do better working to improve your audio quality. What does double $$$ get you? Better build, better Bluetooth, and better Apps (which I got by buying a clearly over priced but best in class NVIDIA SHIELD). I don’t understand why TVs are Smart as who would buy a 4k TV without a 4k Blu-ray player, which are typically better “smart” devices (with HDD support)?

Seems to work fine, except that the Netflix app on the player requires the new HDCP 2.2. on the connected television, so it will not play.

***2+ years of use update: ZERO issues playing DVD, Blu-ray & 4k discs. Have not had to do anything but push the power button and insert the disc & play. Amazing picture quality. NO freezing or glitches like my previous Sony players.***I bought a new 65″ 4k TV and a new 4K AppleTv in 2019. I have owned 2 generations of Sony’s middle to higher end blu-ray players and have experienced loud disc spin noise plus a ton of software buggy issues with both models. Then they dumped support for Hulu. YouTube and Netflix poor to ok reliability, with the YouTube app often not working for weeks at a time. Disc playback was ok IF it didn’t hangup/crash on you on initial disc insertion. So NO MORE Sony Blu-ray players for me. Researched and came across a lot of happy folks using these Panasonic models. Around the holidays it was only $149 Prime so ordered it and glad I did. Picture quality is outstanding and no issues like I was experiencing with the Sony player. Easy setup with plugging in power and HDMI cables (One is provided with the player but I bought a pair of “Atevon High Speed 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 Cable – HDCP 2.2” 6ft cables – ASIN B06XP129CT). Was able to get it connected up to my WiFi network with no trouble. Updated the firmware & good-to-go. One issue I did encounter was the Panasonic remote’s power and volume buttons to control the TV did not work with my Samsung Q80 TV. Page 8 of the DP-UB820 players “advanced owners manual” (google it) explained how to reprogram the remote control – Hold the power button down and input the 2 digit tv code (Samsung #s: 20/21/22) page 26 supplied the different TV brand’s codes. Now buttons are functional with my TV. I am not planning on streaming with any apps on this unit because I am very happy with the quality and ease of the 4k AppleTV. (R.I.P. Sony Blu-Ray player – & good riddance…) Hope this review helps!
