Please Note

Please consider your dog’s swimming ability and unique characteristics that may affect their swimming performance when choosing a life jacket. Since dogs come in various sizes and body shapes, make sure to take any other unique traits (large shoulders, long torso, etc.) into consideration. If your dog is between sizes, it is recommended to size up.

Choosing the Right Size Dog Life Jacket

Measure Girth & Weight

The most important measurement is your dog’s girth. Measure the circumference of the widest part of your dog’s ribcage. Then, weigh your dog and consult the sizing chart. If your dog is on the higher end of a size, size up.

Great lifejacket! I ordered this for my mini long-haired dachshund, who tries hard but is not a strong swimmer. He’s able to stay afloat with this vest (we’re still working on keeping his head above water, but the neck piece on this vest helps a lot).We ordered a size small. For reference, he is only 9 pounds (which is in range for size XS), but all of his measurements put him in the Small range. I was worried it would be too big, but he fits (almost) perfectly in the small since the straps cinch him in. It’s a little big in the back, but he’s still young so he’s got room to grow.

I bought the XL for my 90 lb. German Shepherd. I was debating on getting large because he is (what I consider) small for a german shepherd dog. His girth size is also in the middle of the size chart for a large vest. After reading reviews, I went with the XL because most reviews say that the vest runs small. Very glad I did! Vest seems to fit him perfectly. He did seem to be unsure of how to walk around, but that is just something that would take some getting used. May be a good idea to get your dog accustomed to the vest before heading out to the water, if they haven’t worn one before. Overall, seems to be a very well made product. I did try to pick my dog up with the attached handles at the top of the best, and he made it clear that it was uncomfortable for him (being a shepherd, he is a very vocal and opinionated dog anyway lol). Will update once the weather gets warmer and we go swimming.

We bought this life jacket for our dachshund to give her time out of the Cone of shame, she has had health issues over the past year that have made it necessary for her to be in a cone for SO long. She is about 14 pounds, so we bought size MEDIUM and it fits perfectly. If your dachshund is any larger than this definitely size-up because the life jacket is NOT adjustable, but I measured before buying and the size chart seems accurate! This is going to allow her head to have freedom to lay on something soft again instead of just her plastic cone. The material is comfortable but retains a semi-rigid shape which is perfect for protecting their body if they tend to like to bite themselves or to protect them post-surgery or during health hurdles. She can still walk around easily while wearing this, but she can’t bend back and bite herself so it serves the purpose we needed it for! Well worth it. Again, she is 14lbs and we bought a Medium Size, so if you own a full-size dachshund you will NEED to size UP! :)

Two Pictures Attached!I bought this size *LARGE* for our 7 year old female pit-boxer mix who runs a pretty consistent 46 pounds. She measures 19″ from neck to tail, 19″ around her neck and 27″ around her chest. I had these measurements from the purchase of a Hurtta winter coat for her. She’s definitely not designed for cold weather! :-)- This LARGE is a perfect fit for the dog, whose measurements are detailed above.- There are 3 fairly standard buckles, which you can actually see in the product photo. You adjust the straps to fit and the male part of the buckle clips into the female part. You squeeze the two “springy” side of the male part to release.- You can put the life jacket on the dog while still leashed, an important feature when getting ready to go onto the water from a boat launch or other public area.- The jacket is very easy to secure on the dog. I don’t THINK that the order you buckle the two parts is relevant. You basically lay it on their back like a horse saddle. (I know all about this kind of thing from having watched all the John Wayne movies.) So, lay it on their back and wrap the chest piece, grey in the product photo, snugly around and up to the other side where there is Velcro to hold in in place. Then, insert the two buckles.I like the wrap-around piece because not only is it somewhat elastic to provide a secure fit, but the velcro helps hold it in place while you buckle it AND it protects the dogs from straps going around their chest to prevent sore spots from rubbing, etc.- Next, you secure what I’d guess you call the throat piece. This piece goes sort of under the dog’s chin, is held in place with velcro also, and then you buckle it in. There is also a flap thing to help the dog keep their chin / head out of the water.- Once the dog is in the jacket, it’s quite firmly fixed. I picked her up easily with the two grip straps on top and carried her about 20 feet back and forth on the lawn. Between the wrap-around chest piece, velcro and the buckled straps, there’s no getting out of that jacket that I can see.- Our dog enjoys playing in the water at standing depth, she’s now a swimmer. To test flotation, I went with her about to my chest and let her go. I tried to encourage her to swim around, but she headed straight for shore. I didn’t get as good a flotation test as I would have liked, but I brought her out 4 times and it all worked great in that way.- In hindsight, I wish that I bought the Clownfish design. Our 8 year old grandson is really into fish, the Nemo movies, etc., and I think he would have loved seeing our dog in that outfit.I’d absolutely buy this again and love the great price.

First I followed the weight scale and bought two smalls for my 16 lb dachshunds. But they were a little too small for them, so we swapped them for mediums and they are perfect! My dogs like the water but don’t feel comfortable in a big open lake without something to float them. This is the perfect solution! The handles are perfect for lifting them evenly and comfortably, the neck float helps keep their head above water. The color is perfect to discern the dog from a log or a beaver or some other wild animal. If your dog fell out of the boat it would be very easy for someone else to see them as to not hit them! This product is a must buy for anyone that swims their dogs! The range of motion obviously isn’t the best out of the water, any life jacket is restricting. But more importantly, this does not restrict the swimming motion of dogs at all!

Loved the vest for my bulldog Chubbs. He had ACL surgery and due to the Vegas heat we needed another way for him to get rehabilitation.

My German Shepherd weighs 110 lbs so I got the XL and it fits like a glove! As you can see he’s a handsome boy sporting orange! Easy to see if he falls in the Canal or Ocean! I gave him some training in the pool to give him confidence of the jacket. He’s a 1 1/2 yrs old and stills chases and plays hard. Jumping onto our boat is a safety precaution and those handles on the back has many purposes! Nice quality too!

It looks durable and made with quality materials. It’s also pretty low profile, so it won’t be too bulky for your dog. I only saw girth measurements for sizing but I saw weight measurements on the packaging when it arrived that may help you make your decision:XX Small 11-14″ Girth, up to 11lbsX Small 15-19″, 11-18lbsSmall 19-24″, 15-25lbsMedium 22-29″, 20-50lbsLarge 26-35″, 40-70lbsX Large 31-42″, 70-90lbs

The media could not be loaded.  Got this from an online review about best life preservers for dachshunds and it really is good. It prevents that awful penciling of the dog swimming in a vertical mode trying to climb out of the water. It comfortable has a back strap so you can lift the dog out of the water easily and the dog gets underbelly support that protects it’s back. The dog is comfortable walking in it on land and that is important in a boat. There is support for the neck to hold the head out of the water in an emergency. The only issue I had was finding the right size. It runs small so I had to switch out for a larger size. This dog’s chest was big and a short length means you have to adjust the straps and underbelly to insure that a male is free . I wish the spacing of the underbelly straps could be adjusted and there was a split for males.Otherwise it works wonderfully. The Dog is comfortable. It is great find for this type of dog.

The media could not be loaded.  We have a border collie mix who absolutely loves going in water, but he would splash around and panic when he got in water that was too deep. I’m so glad I got the one for novice swimmers, he’s an athletic and strong dog but none of the others would have been sufficient. He still has absolute terrible form and slaps his front legs on the water, but at least he can float and fetch in the process. This is an amazing doggie vest.
