What is science-led nutrition?

Nutrition inspired by science — not trends — creates differences you can see, feel and trust. Our food scientists understand the combinations of nutrients and ingredients to help support lifelong health.

How much should I feed my pet?

Most Science Diet foods have a feeding guide on the package to help you determine the proper amount for your pet. It’s critical to your pet’s health that his or her physical condition be monitored regularly and the feeding amount adjusted as needed.

How can I tell if an unopened can or bag of cat or dog food is still good?

The datecode on our plastic bags is located on the left gusset, near the 4 or 5-digit SKU number, toward the bottom of the bag. The datecode on our medium and large bags will be located on the top of the bag, generally the front flap.

How should I store my cat or dog’s dry food?

Bags of dry Science Diet, Healthy Advantage and Prescription Diet cat or dog food should be stored in a cool, dry environment under 100°F (38°C).

Let me start by saying I was one of the worst offenders for being 100% against my dogs eating Hill’s Science Diet. I was told that it contained lots of toxic chemicals and was only pushed on consumers by vets because they were paid by Hill’s to push the product. My opinion has since changed since using this product. I have three boxers. One is in perfect health, the other suffers from terrible skin allergies, and the last has a very sensitive stomach due a stomach flip he had surgery for when his previous owners fed him a sock with food on it to try and kill him — because of this, he has terrible farts.Since I’ve been using this product (close to a month now), my allergy dog no longer scratches herself all day and my little tooter dog no longer farts. I am literally amazed. We tried everything from Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin, Nutrish, etc. and nothing has worked for out dogs but this product. I cannot even begin to say how thankful I am we tried this food. While I understand all vets have different opinions, but vet advised my husband and I to steer clear of “grain-free” foods. This really surprised me, because I always thought that they would be healthier for my pups and would prolong their life. Apparently, this is not the case. Through extensive research, they are finding that these types of foods are actually limiting the life of pup’s due to the higher fat contents, which in turn wears down their heart much quicker (apologies if I didn’t explain this correctly; trying to parrot what my vet said).Moving forward, I’ll be using this product and would not hesitate to recommend it to other pet owners who experience the same issues with their pups as I do.

I struggled for about two years with my eight year old male German Shephard. His eliminations would be fine for two or three weeks, then he’d start having loose stools. So it would be chicken and rice for a few days, then ease him back on to his usual food. The vet blamed it on nerves after parasite tests came back negative. More recently, his episodes got worse and there were times my dog would wake me up multiple times to go outside. I even started seeing vomit about once per week. The backyard was a mess!…. Something had to change. Since this food is recommended so frequently and gets great reviews, I decided to try it. The improvement has been 100%! I have switched the two other dogs over to this food and all are doing outstanding on it. All the feces are firm and well formed, and I have found no more vomit, either. By the way, their prior food was Kirkland Turkey and Pea dry food. The dogs had done great on that food for years, so I don’t know what changed. But Science Diet Sensitive Stomach has really worked wonders.

I have a 5 year old Doberman that has been eating Blue Buffalo for years since it’s “the best” … Or so they claim. Dobermans tend to have sensitive stomachs and mine is no exception. After browsing around Amazon and asking some people I decided to give Hill’s a try and so far so good. My dog finally has hard/solid poop!!! And she is excited to eat this food and actually chews it for once. I can’t say much about the coat since it’s still looks the same to me but definitely an improvement on the stomach issue. We are on our 3rd large bag right now. Will update in a few months and let you guys know if anything changes.

This product really hit the spot for a couple of reasons. First, I live in Florida and my Lab gets “hot spots”off and on all summer long. Each trip to the vet is a couple hundred dollars because they give me only enough medicine for one round of treatment so the next month or so I am back again. Secondly, my Lab was shedding like crazy. His coat was dry and dull. When I petted him my hand would be full of hair and the floor would be covered. The other dog has much less hair but her coat was flaking. Third, both of the dogs were eating grass – they look more like cows grazing – and they were throwing up many times a day.I tried several other dog foods without positive results. The vet wanted to do an exploratory operation on the Lab (but not the other dog??). The pet store kept recommending dog foods predicated on price. Finally, after several months, I bought Hill’s Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach and Skin Dry Dog food and within 3 days the vomiting and grazing subsided. It took a bit longer for their coats to shine and the excessive shedding and flaking to stop.Hope this helps.

I have a 10 year old black lab, Sue, that I inherited last year when my friend passed away. So a hugely stressful time for the dog and it really hammered her digestion. She had horrible gas and very loose stools with a mucous coating. Disgusting and unhealthy. Plus she was shedding like mad, in September…We went through 3 dog foods with no improvement until I started her on Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Stomach Chicken, which was the second dog food recommended by her vet. Within a week the gas was nearly completely a thing of the past and the stools were much more solid with no mucous. Simply a huge improvement! And her coat is getting a bit glossier now too, with a lot less shedding. We both still miss her old mistress, but Sue is a happy, healthy dog again!

I rescued this pitbull who had been brought back twice to the shelter. At first I didn’t know why and then I realize that he had gland problems. He would leak on the couches his bed and it was it a dilemma nothing that I bought I tried worked until I bought hills for sensitive stomach. Oh Em G at first I didn’t know why and then I realize that he had gland problems. He would leak on the couch and his bed multiple times a day. And his poops where horrible. I didn’t want to give him back because he’s a great, friendly, lovable and smart boy. I tried every food that promised to help but didn’t until I bought Hills For Sensitive Stomach. It helps within a day. For me it was a Miracle.

My dog has pretty severe allergies: general itching all over, very itchy paws (especially back ones) that she would lick and bite at until they were red, frequent yeast growth and severe ear infections (got so bad once that it emitted a horrible odor that smelled like sour milk) in one or both ears, rubbing her face on the ground, and just general discomfort. Because the allergies were so severe, and they could literally be caused by one or any number of things, I was NOT looking forward to potentially embarking on a extremely time consuming and expensive wild goose chase to figure out what was causing her allergies. Additionally, I was concerned about how long she would have to continue to suffer until I could figure it out.I really didn’t know where to start with narrowing things down, and then someone suggested to try switching her food out – that’s the easiest and least expensive thing to do. I know Science Diet is heralded a very good brand on the less expensive side of the “good dog foods” out there, so it was worth a shot. Before ordering, I called Amazon to see what their return/refund policy on foodstuffs was, in the event that my dog either didn’t like the food or that it did not help with her allergies. Amazon customer service informed me that if I didn’t like the product for any reason and I notified them within 30 days, they would refund the money and I would NOT have to return the food. Perfect!I ordered it and immediately started transiting my dog to this food. When she finally got transitioned to the point where she was eating mostly the Science Diet (about a week and half after I received the food), the majority of the allergy symptoms that she was experiencing basically disappeared. To date (approximately 1 month later), she has completely stopped obsessively scratching as well as licking and biting her paws. Even her ears cleared up a lot, although they still require weekly/bi-weekly cleaning. I AM SO GLAD THIS FOOD WORKED FOR HER.Additionally, I have found that this food is a lot more filling and she gets full at lot faster. She’s not eating nearly as much (and thus not pooping as much), so I’m sure the food itself will last a lot longer! On the downside, I don’t think she really cares for the taste. In fact, she started going on a partial food strike earlier this week (she could never just completely stop eating). But I explained to her that this isn’t Burger King and you cannot have it your way. I also told her that she wasn’t getting anymore treats until she eats her food like she is supposed to. She is now back to eating her food regularly. All in all, this food worked perfect for her! I can’t say it will work for all dogs, but at least ordering from Amazon, you can get a refund if you find that it doesn’t work.

I bought this to give my two dogs some relief from skin issues: one has serious skin issues in that she gets cysts that burst and reform constantly, my other dog has a severe flea allergy which results in hair loss – she also has a sensitive tummy, resulting in terrible breath. This food seems to have helped with their issues. Serious skin issue dog, this food coupled with weekly bathes in Sulfodene shampoo seems to have stopped the cysts from reforming (Thank God). Flea Allergy dog has less dry, flaky skin and it seems to agree with her tummy better. The cost increase was minimal from their previous grocery store food when you compare the per oz pricing. The food delivered always looks fresh and my dogs like the taste. They used to get canned food with dry, but they no longer require it as they like this food the way it is. Only con is I wish we could get delivery every 3 weeks instead of once per month. With 130lbs of dog we are living on the edge every month. Lol

Hi, name is Nicole and I’m a shopping addict

For years I have given my animals (cats and dog) science diet. Growing up my family did, too. My dad swears it makes them only go number 2 once a day. While I don’t track my cat’s #2’s very well, I can say that my dog only dumps once a day. The food has always been fresh and as expected. The sensitive stomach & skin has really proven to make a difference. I often questions those claims, assuming there isn’t much change in the formula, but once I switched to this kind of science diet, my dog has thrown up way less, and his skin is less dry and itchy. It’s definitely the dog food we will stick with. Plus, I always like the “job well done” I get from my vet when she asks me what food he eats. And yes, she pretty much asks me every time.

My dog is 8 years old and has been on Rachel Ray’s chicken dry dogwood since she was 1 yr old. That food is perfectly fine, but because of my son feeding her people food and her age, she began to have digestive issues and has been overweight for years. After doing some research, I switched her to Hill’s Science Diet and within 5 days, she is like her 2 yr old self again. No more problems with gas, burping, and vomiting as she had been doing. I also put her on Hill’s treats and laid the law down to my son about giving her anything he eats. She is now on her 3rd-40lb bag of this food and is also trimming down to the weight she should be at. If you are on the fence about trying this food, don’t hesitate, it is fantastic and obviously delicious because she gobbles it up!
